Formative Assessment as Instructional Practice: The Logical Next Step with Dan Mulligan

Research overwhelmingly confirms it! Formative assessment significantly improves student learning. This expanded version of a workshop presented at the 2008 ASCD National Conference in New Orleans to an overcapacity audience will translate the theory behind formative assessment into real-world practice through new SOL-based hands-on activities and practical tips.

Learning Prospectus:

·        Reflect on current assessment practice;

·        Structure an assessment program that blends summative and formative to inform instructional decisions and encourage students to try;

·        Recognize through the use of formative assessment and the discussion around the results of these assessments, how teachers can refine their craft of teaching, focus instructional strategies, and boost the performance of each learner;

·        Practice and model formative assessment strategies to support the SOL; and

·        Learn how to implement formative assessment.
